PCI PROJECT 10.3.2: Internal hydrogen infrastructure in Bulgaria towards the Greece border
PCI 10.3.2 Internal hydrogen infrastructure in Bulgaria towards the Greece border is part of the First list of projects of common interest (PCIs) and projects of mutual interest (PMIs) of the European Union published on 28 November 2023 under Regulation (EU) 2022/869 in the priority corridor: Hydrogen interconnections in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe (HI East).
PROJECT PROMOTER: BULGARTRANSGAZ EAD
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project envisages the construction of a new infrastructure on the territory of Bulgaria, designed to transport 100% hydrogen.
The planned infrastructure includes a DN 1000 pipeline with a length of approximately 250 km, together with 2 compressor stations in the area of Petrich and Dupnitsa.
The objective of the project is to provide conditions for the transport of hydrogen from/to Greece and to region of Sofia, Bulgaria.
The project is being developed in coordination with a H2 infrastructure project on the territory of Greece (Internal hydrogen infrastructure in Greece towards the Bulgarian border (PCI 10.3.1)), with operator DESFA, and will create conditions for a bidirectional cross-border hydrogen transport between Bulgaria and Greece at a new connection point in the Kulata/Sidirokastro region.
The implementation of the project will also create an opportunity for further development (expansion) of the infrastructure both internally and to the cross-border interconnection points with Romania and other neighbouring countries.
The project will make an important contribution to the implementation of the South Eastern Priority Hydrogen Corridor/HI EAST, which will provide a route for the transport of green hydrogen from the South Eastern to Central Europe, both from local production and imports.
The project, therefore, represents an important milestone in the development of the hydrogen network in the region and is already part of various initiatives and scenarios for the development of a future hydrogen market:
- The project is part of the European Hydrogen Backbone’s (EHB)vision to accelerate the decarbonisation of the energy sector by building entirely new hydrogen infrastructure and using the capabilities of the existing gas infrastructure to integrate low-carbon fuels into the networks.
- The planned H2 infrastructure on the territory of Bulgaria is also considered as part of a future hydrogen supply chain (production, transport, distribution, use, equipment manufacturers, etc.), the potential of which is being assessed within European Clean Hydrogen Alliance (ECH2A).
STATUS OF THE PROJECT: Forthcoming Feasibility Study
