The symbolic beginning of the construction of the Bulgarian part of gas pipeline Ruse-Giurgiu (Gas Interconnection Bulgaria-Romania) was put on 16 August 2012 – the first of the planned new interconnections of Bulgaria with neighboring countries which will make possible the achievement of one of the main goals regarding the gas market – diversification of the sources and routes of supply.

The ceremony which was attended by the Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, the Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Delian Dobrev, the Minister of Health Desislava Atanasova, the Major of Ruse Municipality Plamen Stoilov, the Chief Executive Officer of Bulgarian Energy Holding EAD Mihail Andonov, the Chair of the Board of Directors of Bulgartransgaz EAD Georgi Gegov, the Chief Executive Officer of Bulgartransgaz EAD Kiril Temelkov, the Deputy Director General of Transgaz S.A. Romania Liviu Pintikan and other officials, took place on the territory of AGRS Ruse East in Ruse.

The Gas Interconnection Bulgaria-Romania is carried out jointly by Bulgartransgaz EAD and the Romanian transmission system operator Transgaz S.A. The pipe has total length of 25 km, of which 15.4 km on Bulgarian territory, 7.5 km on Romanian territory and 2.1 km Danube undercrossing. The maximum capacity of the interconnector is 1.5 billion m3/year, and the minimum is 0.5 billion m3/year, diameter of the pipe Dn 500 mm and working pressure Pn 50 bar.

The forecasted total value of the project is 23.8 million euro, whereas non-recourse financial aid in the amount of 8.929 million euro was awarded to the two companies from the European Energy Programme for Recovery. The section on Bulgarian territory is worth 7.1 million euro. It is financed with 4.4 million from the European Energy Programme for Recovery and 2.7 million euro co-financing on the part of Bulgartransgaz EAD.

The project is being realized in stages and is divided into the following sub-activities:

  • Construction of a gas pipeline from the Bulgarian gas transmission system (from AGRS Ruse-East of Bulgartransgaz EAD) to the bank of the Danube in the field of Marten;
  • Construction of a gas pipeline under the Danube floor which connects the two newly built sections on the territory of Bulgaria and Romania;
  • Construction of a gas pipeline from the Romanian gas transmission system (from Giurgiu) to the bank of the Danube;
  • Construction of gas metering stations in Ruse and Giurgiu;

The Danube undercrossing will be carried out using the method of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), a modern eco-friendly technology which avoids any interference with the riverbed of the Danube and navigation on it.

The deadline for completion of all activities and putting the project in operation is until 31 May 2013.
